In Parliament yesterday, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo clarified a prevalent misconception about the Central Database Hub (PADU) concerning the Personal Data Protection Act 2024 (PDPA). He stated that PADU is not subject to PDPA regulations since it collects data on Malaysian citizens to facilitate accurate socio-economic measurements.
According to BERNAMA, Gobind explained that the PDPA governs the processing of personal data in commercial transactions. However, since PADU holds government-level data, it is exempt from PDPA regulations.
The Digital Minister emphasized that this exemption does not absolve the Federal and State Governments of their responsibility and liability in managing data. Gobind pointed out that other laws, such as the Official Secrets Act 1972, along with various circulars binding officers and public servants, ensure accountability.
