2 Chinese nationals detained in Genting over sale of smuggled cigarettes

KUALA LUMPUR: Two foreign nationals have been detained over the sale of smuggled cigarettes in Genting Highlands, Pahang.

They were a man and woman from China.

The Immigration Department also seized 111 boxes of cigarettes in 102 cartons of various brands suspected to be contraband, besides RM600 from the suspects.

Preliminary checks revealed that the woman had abused her social visit pass, while the man had no documents. The suspects were involved in the illegal sale of smuggled cigarettes, targeting visitors to Genting Highlands." said the department in a statement.

"The selling price ranged from RM20 to RM30 per box of various brands from China, and they had been operating for five months," it said.

Both suspects are under investigation for immigration offenses and are currently held at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot here.
