The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced it will conduct a public inquiry into the proposed licensing requirements for social media and internet messaging service providers. The inquiry aims to ensure the final framework is fair, effective, and aligns with the needs of both the industry and the public.

MCMC explained that since the Cabinet approved the framework in March, it has engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including service providers, civil society organizations, NGOs, and law enforcement agencies. These ongoing discussions have been crucial in shaping a regulatory framework that addresses the concerns and needs of all involved.

The new licensing requirements target social media and internet messaging platforms with at least eight million registered users. This measure is part of a broader effort to create a safer online environment by tackling issues such as online gambling, scams, and pornography.
