Man United Reports Fifth Consecutive Financial Loss Amid Lowest League Finish Since 1990

LONDON, Sept 12 — Manchester United announced a net loss of £113.2 million (RM647.7 million) for the 2023/24 financial year, marking their fifth consecutive year of losses. This comes despite recording their highest-ever revenues of £661.8 million, a 2.1% increase driven by exceptional commercial and matchday income.

The financial difficulties were compounded by £47.8 million in “exceptional items,” mainly linked to Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a minority stake in the club, finalized in February.

On the pitch, United finished eighth in the Premier League for the 2023/24 season, their lowest league position since 1990, and were eliminated in the Champions League group stage. However, they secured the FA Cup, defeating Manchester City in the final, marking their second major trophy in two years.

The club has recently undergone a significant restructuring, including the appointment of a new chief executive, Omar Berrada, formerly of Manchester City. Berrada emphasized the focus on financial sustainability and operational efficiency to boost on-field performance.

Under Premier League profitability and sustainability rules, clubs can record a maximum loss of £105 million over three seasons, with certain losses considered “allowable” for infrastructure, youth, and women's team spending. Last season, Everton and Nottingham Forest faced points deductions for breaching these regulations.

Manchester United, having started the new Premier League season with two defeats in three matches, will face Southampton on Saturday.
