*SEPANG, Oct 7* — Harimau Malaya midfielder Mohammad Syamer Kutty Abba is optimistic that the inclusion of young players will inject new energy into the national team ahead of their friendly match against New Zealand on October 14.
He sees the match at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland as a chance to evaluate the team's chemistry and prepare for the ASEAN Championship 2024 in December. "Having both young and experienced players is a positive development that strengthens the team," he said. "Our goal is to win, and blending the squad is crucial."
Harimau Malaya head coach Pau Marti Vicente has called up three under-23 players for the match, including Selangor goalkeeper Azim Al Amin Kamaruddin and two recent U-19 squad members, Haziq Aiman Mohd Esa and Haykal Danish Mohd Haizon.
Syamer also noted that team captain Dion Cools’ absence will provide an opportunity for other players to showcase their leadership skills. "His absence isn't a problem; it allows others to step up and contribute," he stated. Cools is missing the match due to family commitments.
The last encounter between Harimau Malaya and New Zealand was in 2006, resulting in two losses for Malaysia.
