Vettaiyan’s Day 1 Box Office: Rajinikanth-Amitabh Starrer Scores Second-Biggest Tamil Opening of 2024*
The much-anticipated Tamil action drama Vettaiyan, starring Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, had an impressive start at the box office, earning Rs 30 crore net on its opening day. The film performed strongest in Tamil Nadu, contributing Rs 26 crore, with Telugu collections adding over Rs 3 crore. However, the Hindi version was not released in national chains due to ongoing OTT window disputes, potentially limiting the film's reach.
While Vettaiyan had a strong debut, it falls short of Rajinikanth’s last film Jailer, which opened at Rs 48 crore. Directed by TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan is seen as a more grounded commercial entertainer, in contrast to the larger-than-life appeal of Jailer.
Despite the comparison, Vettaiyan still demonstrates Rajinikanth's box office pull at 73, and the film will hope for steady collections over the weekend, with a potential boost from positive word of mouth and the Dussehra holiday. Vettaiyan now aims to match the performance of Rajinikanth’s biggest hits, though it trails behind Vijay’s GOAT, which opened with Rs 44 crore.
