The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express (Train No. 12578) derailed on Friday night after colliding with a stationary goods train at Kavaraippettai railway station near Chennai, resulting in at least 19 injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, although three passengers were critically injured and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The accident occurred around 8:30 pm on the Chennai-Gudur line, between Ponneri and Kavaraippettai stations, causing significant damage to both trains. In response, several trains, including the Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express and Jabalpur-Madurai Superfast Special Train, were diverted due to ongoing restoration work at the site.

According to RN Singh, General Manager of Southern Railways, the passenger train mistakenly entered a loop line where the goods train was parked, despite the driver following the correct signals after departing from Chennai. Although the train had a green signal for the main line, it veered onto the loop line and struck the goods train, leading to the derailment of 12 coaches and resulting in passenger injuries.
