Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie: Rajinikanth's Second Story Choice After First One Was a No-Go*

Reports indicate that Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is not the first story presented to superstar Rajinikanth. Following his success in the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, which grossed around Rs 640 crore, Rajinikanth has begun work on his next film.

Lokesh, known for hits with stars like Kamal Haasan, Thalapathy Vijay, and Karthi, has become a highly sought-after director in Tamil cinema, especially with his "Lokesh Cinematic Universe," which began with Prisoner and continues through to Leo. The upcoming Kaithi 2 is also anticipated to be a major addition to this universe.

Interestingly, Rajinikanth decided against the initial story Lokesh pitched, which was designed as a pan-Indian project to be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. Due to logistical challenges and a tight six-month timeline for Coolie, Lokesh shifted gears and presented a new story to Rajinikanth, who agreed to it. Cinematographer Manoj confirmed that while the original concept is still under consideration, it will require more time and budget to develop properly.
