Perak Wildlife Authority Urges Caution on Gerik-Jeli Highway Amid Elephant Collisions*

IPOH, Nov 8 — In response to recent car collisions involving elephants on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway, the Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is urging drivers to remain vigilant.

Director Yusof Shariff announced plans for the Perak Elephant Sanctuary (PES), set to be completed by 2029, which aims to reduce human-elephant conflicts. In the meantime, he emphasized the need for drivers to be aware that they are entering the elephants' habitat, especially during the night and early morning when encounters are more likely.

Drivers are advised to slow down, heed warning signs, and maintain a safe distance from elephants. Provoking the animals, such as honking or using headlights, should be avoided.

Yusof explained that while the PES will provide a refuge for elephants involved in conflicts, it will not eliminate all interactions. Elephants able to survive in the wild will be released back into enriched areas after recovery.
