Wolves Sack Gary O'Neil After Four Consecutive Defeats Leave Them in Relegation Zone"
Wolverhampton Wanderers have dismissed manager Gary O'Neil following a run of four straight Premier League defeats that has left the club second from bottom in the table with just nine points from 16 games.
The decision came after a 2-1 home loss to fellow relegation candidates Ipswich on Saturday. Wolves' chairman, Jeff Shi, expressed gratitude for O'Neil's hard work, noting his role in guiding the team to a successful first season. O'Neil had taken over in August 2023, signing a four-year contract, but the team now faces a battle to avoid relegation, with only two wins and 11 losses this season.
O'Neil admitted to struggling to get the team to cope at the Premier League level, citing difficulties in getting players to adjust to basic expectations. Tensions boiled over during recent defeats, including a post-match scuffle involving midfielder Mario Lemina and the loss to Ipswich, which saw players like Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha visibly frustrated.
The club will now seek a new manager to turn their fortunes around, with just four points separating them from safety.
