Malaysia's First Disaster Simulation Centre to Be Ready by February 2025, Says Deputy Minister

PUCHONG — Malaysia’s first disaster simulation centre, set up for the Special Malaysian Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART), is on track for completion by February 2025, according to Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

Located at Pulau Meranti, the facility, which is 99% complete, will also be the second of its kind in ASEAN after Singapore. The RM33.4 million project, overseen by the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR), enhances SMART’s disaster response capabilities.

Ahmad Maslan highlighted that the centre will offer realistic training scenarios, including cable car rescues, underground train accidents, and building collapses, helping SMART maintain its recognition by the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

Additionally, Ahmad announced plans for permanent disaster evacuation centres within school compounds. Eight schools have been selected for this initiative, with two already approved and six in the planning stages.
