Super League Renamed “Unify League” Seeks FIFA and UEFA Recognition

PARIS — The promoters of the Super League have relaunched their proposal under a new name, the "Unify League," and are pushing for official recognition from FIFA and UEFA. A22 Sports Management submitted their plans after consulting with clubs, leagues, and other stakeholders, revising the qualification system to prioritize annual domestic performances.

The revised plan features 96 teams split into four leagues, with matches running from September to April, followed by a knockout phase. A22 argues that last year’s European Court of Justice ruling supports the creation of a competition that is merit-based, inclusive, and fits within the current football calendar.

In a bid to address challenges such as rising subscription costs and overloaded player schedules, A22 CEO Bernd Reichart said the proposal aims to improve the sport's format and governance. Matches would be streamed live for free.

The move comes after the failed 2021 Super League attempt, which faced a massive backlash from fans and UEFA. Despite the project’s collapse, Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to support the idea. The European Court of Justice recently ruled that UEFA abused its power to block the breakaway league, but UEFA maintains that the judgment does not grant third parties the right to create new competitions without approval.
