Malaysia Open 2025: Debut Disappointments for Jun Hao, Pang Ron-Su Yin

KUALA LUMPUR  — Malaysia’s debutants in the 2025 Malaysia Open, Leong Jun Hao and mixed doubles duo Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, faced tough defeats in the opening round at the Axiata Arena today.

Jun Hao, ranked 29th, showed glimpses of promise but ultimately lost 17-21, 21-16, 13-21 to China’s 16th seed Lu Guang Zu. The Malaysian acknowledged his opponent's experience and admitted he gave away crucial points in the third game, making it hard to recover.

In mixed doubles, Pang Ron and Su Yin battled through a tense match but were edged out 26-28, 21-14, 22-24 by Taiwan's Ming Che Lu-Hung En-Tzu. Despite holding a significant lead early in the first game and five match-point chances, they couldn’t convert, leaving them disappointed.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles camp suffered another blow when Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien were beaten 21-12, 21-13 by Indonesia's fifth seeds, Dejan Fernandisyah and Gloria Widjaja.

On a brighter note, defending women’s singles champion An Se Young of South Korea had no such issues, cruising past Denmark's Line Christophersen 21-12, 21-13 in just 36 minutes to begin her title defense with a dominant win.
