South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol once again refused to be questioned by investigators today, as the deadline for his detention approaches. Yoon attempted to impose martial law on December 3, triggering chaos, but his bid lasted only six hours before being blocked by lawmakers. Following the failed power grab, Yoon was impeached, and despite initially resisting arrest, he became the first sitting president to be detained.

On Wednesday, authorities executed an arrest warrant, allowing investigators to hold Yoon for 48 hours. They are expected to seek an extension of 20 days today, giving them more time to formalize an indictment. Yoon's legal team confirmed that he would not appear for questioning, as he had already provided his position to investigators.

Yoon, who faces insurrection charges, exercised his right to remain silent during questioning on Wednesday and has rejected the legality of the investigation. His political party, the People Power Party, has called his detention unlawful, while the opposition Democratic Party welcomed it as a step toward restoring legal order.

In parallel, the Constitutional Court is reviewing whether to uphold Yoon’s impeachment, which could result in fresh elections if confirmed. Yoon has been absent from the trial hearings, which could continue for months.
