The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will only conduct mobile phone checks on individuals suspected in specific investigations, according to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain. He clarified that checks will not be random or conducted in public areas without reason.
Only officers ranked Inspector and above will carry out these checks, which must be based on intelligence, reasonable suspicion, or information indicating a potential crime. Razarudin emphasized that these inspections will be in line with existing laws, the Federal Constitution, and respect for individual rights.
The IGP also pointed out that police have the authority to inspect mobile phones under various legal provisions if there is evidence of criminal activity. A meeting between PDRM and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) is set to address concerns over this practice.
