Zahid: Free Tolls Won’t Solve Traffic Congestion, Road Users Must Plan Better

PUTRAJAYA — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that offering free tolls during festive seasons does not address the root cause of traffic congestion on highways. He emphasized that road users need to change their behaviour and plan their trips more effectively.

Zahid explained that the government’s toll reimbursements, which exceed RM35 million daily, don't solve congestion issues, as the toll concessions are extended instead of receiving direct cash compensation. This follows the Cabinet's decision to end the free toll policy, recommended by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He urged drivers to adjust their schedules during peak travel times, saying that without the "gift" of free tolls, road users must take responsibility for better trip planning. Zahid also called on rural entrepreneurs to embrace digital platforms and expand their business networks.

At the Rural Business Challenge (RBC) 2.0 award ceremony, 45 youth entrepreneurs were recognized and awarded business grants totalling RM15 million.
