No Timeline Yet for Repatriation of Palestinians in Malaysia, Despite Ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR  — Despite a recent ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, there is still no set timeline for the return of 41 Palestinians and their 86 family members who have been receiving medical treatment in Malaysia since last August.

Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia, Walid Abu Ali, said the embassy is awaiting a response from the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) after submitting a diplomatic note. While most of the Palestinians are eager to return home, some wish to stay until the situation in Gaza stabilizes.

"We are guests in Malaysia, and we must respect the rules," Walid added.

The group arrived in Malaysia on August 16, 2024, through a joint effort by Egypt and Malaysia for medical care due to injuries sustained in the Gaza conflict.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that efforts are underway to expedite their repatriation, pending approval from Mindef and coordination with Palestinian and Egyptian authorities.
