PASIR MAS — Authorities' crackdown on illegal crossings at the Malaysia-Thailand border in Rantau Panjang has forced operators of illegal jetties to relocate their activities to Thailand. The move, which began on December 1, has led to the abandonment of six illegal crossing points, including two in the town center, according to Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, commander of the General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade.
Despite the enforcement, some individuals, mainly from Thailand, still attempt illegal crossings. Recently, a 67-year-old Thai man was arrested for attempting to cross via an illegal jetty, claiming his name was blacklisted by Malaysian authorities.
The crackdown has also impacted local businesses, with previously bustling stalls now closed and the area noticeably quieter. The Pound and MCA illegal jetties were among the most frequently used for such crossings.
