Worst Floods in Bintulu’s History: Over 1,900 Evacuated as Sarawak Faces Crisis
KUCHING — The floods in Bintulu have been described as the worst the area has ever experienced, with over 1,900 people evacuated to temporary relief centres (PPS) by 8 pm last night. Torrential rain over the past two days has inundated areas, including residential neighbourhoods and petrochemical plants that have never flooded before.
Local resident Claire Fabian, who has lived in the area for over 30 years, shared on social media that this was the worst flood she had ever seen, with waters inside her home reaching knee height, washing away furniture and appliances.
The flooding in northern Sarawak has prompted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to mobilise federal and state agencies to coordinate flood relief efforts, prioritising the safety of those affected. Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chair, Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah Embas, called it the worst disaster the state has faced, though he commended the quick relief efforts, including the rapid opening of PPS.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof visited the area and announced RM1,000 in initial assistance for each registered household head relocated to a PPS.
Apart from Bintulu, the floods have also impacted Serian, Selangau, Tatau, and Kuching.
