Penang Factory Fumigation Tragedy: One Dead, One Critical from Toxic Gas Exposure

BUTTERWORTH — A worker has died and another is in critical condition after inhaling toxic gas during pest control fumigation at a factory in Perai, Penang, on Wednesday.

The victims, employees of an appointed contractor, were exposed to hazardous chemicals while conducting fumigation work from January 21 to 28. On Wednesday, they returned to the site to take gas readings but collapsed due to vomiting, shortness of breath, and fainting.

The local man was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other is critically ill. Six other workers also showed symptoms of exposure but have been treated and discharged. Doctors who assisted the victims also experienced health issues.

The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (JKKP) has shut down the site and banned the use of methyl bromide, the fumigation chemical, until the investigation is complete. The employer has been ordered to conduct an internal probe and submit findings. Legal action will be taken if violations are found.
