SAN FRANCISCO — Google has updated its AI principles, removing previous commitments not to use the technology for weapons or surveillance. This change comes just weeks after tech leaders, including CEO Sundar Pichai, attended the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.

The revised principles, shared in a blog post, no longer include promises made in 2018 about not designing AI for harmful weapons or surveillance that violates human rights. Instead, the updated guidelines emphasize AI development driven by values like freedom, equality, and respect for human rights, with a focus on global growth and national security.

The shift in Google’s stance follows broader changes under the Trump administration, which rescinded AI safety regulations put in place by former President Biden. Google had previously pulled out of a Pentagon project involving AI and weapons after employee protests, but now the company says its focus is on AI that benefits society while balancing global competition and national security concerns.
