BAMAKO (Mali) — At least 48 people were killed when an illegally operated gold mine collapsed in western Mali yesterday, according to local sources and authorities.
Mali, one of Africa's top gold producers, faces frequent deadly mining accidents due to unregulated operations.
The victims, including a woman with her baby on her back, fell into water after the collapse. Search efforts are ongoing.
The incident occurred at an abandoned site previously operated by a Chinese company. In recent months, Mali has seen several deadly mining accidents, including a January landslide that killed at least 10 people.
