British Man Arrested in Thailand After Overstaying Visa for 25 Years

BANGKOK — A 60-year-old British man was arrested in Chiang Mai for overstaying his tourist visa by a record 25 years. He entered Thailand in 2000 on a 30-day visa and never left, evading police checks by claiming to be renewing his visa.

The man, who had been living in Thailand since 2000, was arrested during an immigration crackdown. Authorities discovered he had overstayed for 9,135 days, setting a new record. He had even renewed his passport in 2018, but it showed no immigration stamps.

The man, who lived in Bangkok for 13 years and later moved to Chiang Mai, will be deported back to Britain.
