SINGAPORE — The Singapore government is considering caning as a punishment for serious scam-related offences, acknowledging the significant harm they cause, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling said in Parliament. This comes as scam cases rose by 10.6% to 51,501 in 2024, with losses reaching a record S$1.1 billion, a 70.6% increase from the previous year. Jurong MP Dr. Tan Wu Meng had proposed caning for such offences during the Home Affairs Ministry budget debate.
