PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's stunning 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the 1975 Men’s Hockey World Cup is a prime example of how a team of stars can be beaten by a well-cohesive team. The victory, 50 years ago in Kuala Lumpur, was particularly sweet for Seremban locals, with alumni from St Paul’s Institution (SPI) contributing significantly to the success.

SPI produced two coaches—head coach Ho Koh Chye and assistant Lawrence van Huizen—and two players, Franco D’Cruz and Brian Sta Maria, all of whom played key roles in the victory. The team’s belief, cohesion, and adventurous play, despite difficult conditions, reflected the Paulian spirit of leadership and teamwork. SPI, known for fostering individual potential, consistently produced hockey Olympians and world-class players.
