Cop pleads not guilty to making lewd gesture at protest

KUALA LUMPUR: A 33-year-old police officer, Faris Ariffin Tait, pleaded not guilty in magistrate’s court today to making obscene gestures towards a woman during a protest last December. He is accused of making lewd gestures towards Zaahirah Sulaiman, 26, on December 13 at 3:58 pm along Jalan Tun Razak.

Faris, who is married with one child, faces charges under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting modesty, punishable with up to five years in prison, a fine, or both. Bail was set at RM3,500 with one surety, and the case will be mentioned on May 14.
