JOHOR BARU: A 27-year-old man sustained serious injuries after cutting himself with a meat cleaver in front of a restaurant at a food court in Danga Bay here around midnight.

It is learned that the man had wandered into the food court under emotional distress after a misunderstanding with his wife.

Previously, there was a 12-second video taken by a bystander that went viral on social media, which showed the man in black t-shirt and brown sling bag holding a meat cleaver to his neck.

He was seen pacing in front of the food counter while speaking in a frustrated manner. However, the video did not show what happened next

Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said his team received a call on the incident from a Danga Bay auxiliary police officer.

"Preliminary investigations found that the victim is a local and was experiencing emotional distress due to domestic issues.

"The victim is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Hospital Sultanah Aminah," he said in a statement.

Raub also urged the public not to share videos of the incident to prevent misunderstanding and speculation, which could disrupt social harmony.
