PETALING JAYA: Top seeds Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie’s hopes of retaining their Swiss Open mixed doubles title was dashed by Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Suppissara Paewsampran.
The eighth-seeded Thai pair took just 34 minutes to win 21-18, 21-10 in the quarterfinal match played in Basel last night.
Soon Huat-Shevon appeared tired in the match against the much younger opponents after their hour-long battle in the second round match a day earlier against another Thai pair Ruttanapak Oupthong-Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat.
The Malaysian pair have now lost three out of their five meetings with Dechapol-Suppissara.
Last week, Soon Huat-Shevon Lai eliminated the Thai duo in the opening round of the All England championship.
With this loss, there will be no Malaysians in the semifinal stage for the second consecutive BWF tournament, after the All England.
No other Malaysian singles player or doubles pair made it past the second round at the Swiss Open, a performance that has drawn much criticism from sports fans on social media.
