Youth charged with university student's attempted murder on campus

SUNGAI PETANI: A 19-year-old university student pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to attempting to murder another student on campus last week.

The accused, B. Vashigharan, 19, made the plea before judge Roslan Hamid.

According to the charge sheet, Vashigharan is accused of attempting to murder P. Kirtanah, 19, by stabbing her with a knife in front of a toilet at AIMST University on the morning of March 17.

The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Muhammad Fitri Wan Azizan requested that bail be denied, as the charge is a non-bailable offence.

However, defence counsel Ashokumar appealed for bail at the court's discretion.

The court denied bail and set May 14 for mention.

The victim, who was hospitalised following the incident, has since been discharged.
