SHAH ALAM: Police have confirmed that the suspect in the robbery of RM2 million worth of jewellery from a gold shop at the NSK Kota Damansara supermarket on Saturday is an auxiliary policeman employed by a utility company.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan also confirmed that the 32-year-old suspect carried out the crime alone, using a company-issued firearm.

According to him, the investigation revealed that the suspect, committing his first robbery, did so to settle a debt he was carrying.

"The investigation found that on the day of the incident, the suspect was not working and was scheduled for the midnight shift after the robbery.

"He has a debt of nearly RM20,000... one of the reasons he committed the robbery was to pay off his debt. Who he owes is still under police investigation.

"After three days of investigation, we found that he acted alone. He drove himself to the scene and escaped alone in the same car," he said at a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters today.

Hussein said the firearm used by the suspect was one of the weapons issued by his workplace.

"The suspect had the password and access to take the firearm. He took the firearm and committed the robbery before returning the weapon to its original place.

"He then went home to prepare for his midnight shift.

"But he did not make it to work as he was arrested by police while preparing to leave for work," he said.

He added that during the arrest, the police found a set of keys, a Proton-branded remote control, a mobile phone, a backpack, 81 gold chains, RM1,800 in cash, a police card in the suspect's name, and other items related to the case.
