PUTRAJAYA: A family outing turned into a terrifying ordeal when a 3-year-old girl was electrocuted after touching an exposed wire at a field near Dataran Putrajaya, close to the Putrajaya Corporation Complex, last Thursday.
The incident occurred during a festive visit when Siti Nadira Razali and her husband, Mahadzir Rosli, both 37, took their two daughters, aged 9 and 3, to break fast at the area here.
After their meal, the family stopped by the Anjung Syawal sales tent beside the field to purchase Hari Raya necessities.
At around midnight, they returned to the field, intending to head home shortly after.
However, tragedy struck when the two girls wandered towards an exhibition area.
The younger child suddenly collapsed in convulsions after touching a decorative light wire, prompting her elder sister to scream in panic upon witnessing the incident.
"It happened in an instant. After hearing the scream, my husband and I rushed over and saw our youngest daughter lying on the field," she said when contacted.
The incident went viral on Nadira's Facebook page, showing what happened to her two children at Dataran Putrajaya field.
Nadira said she grabbed a wooden stick to push away the wire her youngest daughter was holding. The girl regained consciousness shortly after.
She added that she was grateful both her daughters survived the ordeal.
During the incident, the elder sister also tried to help by removing the wire after panicking upon seeing her younger sister in convulsions.
"I can't imagine if my daughter had died because of this incident, especially with Hari Raya just days away.
"After the incident, my husband and I rushed the children to Putrajaya Hospital for outpatient treatment.
"The next day, we brought them back to the hospital as they complained of discomfort and redness on their bodies and hands," she said.
Nadira said her eldest daughter only suffered a minor shock, while the youngest sustained injuries to her hands and fingers. She is now in stable condition after undergoing a minor surgery.
She added that her youngest daughter is scheduled to undergo a second surgery tomorrow and may require a skin graft from her thigh to cover burns on her fingers.
"We plan to lodge a police report so that those responsible will take safety at public areas seriously and prevent similar incidents from happening to others," she said.
