Ampang Jaya, Selangor – A massive blackout plunged Spain and Portugal into darkness, disrupting train travel, trapping people in elevators, and causing widespread phone and internet outages. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reported a sudden 15-gigawatt power loss and said all potential causes, including cyberattacks (later dismissed), were being analyzed. Power was partially restored in Madrid and Lisbon, but full restoration was expected to take time, potentially affecting work on Tuesday. The outage briefly impacted southwest France and caused internet and airport check-in issues in Morocco. The blackout led to panic, cash withdrawals, and traffic congestion, halting the Madrid Open. Nuclear power plants went offline as a precaution but remained safe. The European Commission and European Council stated they were monitoring the situation, with the latter ruling out a cyberattack. Ukraine offered assistance based on their experience with grid attacks. The blackout affected millions across the Iberian Peninsula, disrupting flights in major cities and causing transport chaos in Barcelona. Internet connectivity plummeted. Hospitals relied on backup generators. Similar large-scale blackouts have occurred globally in recent years.
