In an interview with TIME, KUALA LUMPUR — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted he regrets antagonising Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whom he now accuses of seeking revenge following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2020.
Dr Mahathir explained that the planned power transition failed when he resigned amid political turmoil, making it impossible to hand over power to Anwar. He also compared Anwar to former PM Najib Razak, alleging similarities in political conduct, while criticising Anwar’s administration for alleged corruption.
These remarks come as anti-graft probes target Mahathir’s sons and allies. Anwar has denied any political vendetta, asserting his commitment to combating corruption.
Their strained relationship dates back to 1998, when Mahathir dismissed Anwar as deputy prime minister. This led to years of legal battles and imprisonment for Anwar, which was later followed by a royal pardon in 2018.
