A stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Goa’s Shirgao village during a fire-walking ritual early Friday killed six people and injured around 80 others.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming that the victims died before reaching the hospital. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said five of the injured are in critical condition and on ventilators, while others are being treated in a special emergency ward.
The fire-walking event is part of the annual Lairai Zatra, a major Hindu festival in Goa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the victims’ families.
Stampedes at religious events remain a recurring tragedy in India.
