VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV will lead the Regina Coeli prayer from St Peter’s Basilica today, marking his second public appearance since being elected as the first American pope.

Born Robert Francis Prevost, the 69-year-old former missionary in Peru was chosen Thursday as the 267th pope, with cardinals hoping he will bring unity and renewal to the Catholic Church. He has pledged to follow the humble example of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21.

Known for his quiet, prayerful style and commitment to the poor, Pope Leo visited Francis’s tomb and an Augustinian shrine before today’s prayer. His official schedule includes meetings with the media, diplomats, and Vatican officials, culminating in his inaugural mass on May 18 and first general audience on May 21.

He has kept existing Vatican leadership in place for now, preferring to take time for reflection before making changes.
