SINGAPORE — Cheng Guoyuan, 49, admitted to attempting to murder his wife in a brutal cleaver attack on Beach Road in 2022, fearing she would expose a past wrongdoing involving her daughter. The violent assault left 44-year-old Han Hongli permanently disfigured and disabled, with severe injuries including blindness in one eye and partial hand amputation. The attack, captured on video and widely circulated online, shocked the public. Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence and caning, while the defence has requested a 15-year term. Sentencing is set for June 3.
