KUALA LUMPUR — Asean should prioritise small, practical steps over ambitious goals to boost regional economic integration, said Asean-BAC chair Nazir Razak at the 46th Asean Summit.

While initially inspired by the Asean Charter’s grand vision, Nazir now believes that steady, realistic progress suits Asean better than emulating the EU model. He emphasised the need to adapt to today’s protectionist global climate, where free markets face growing restrictions.

Nazir urged governments to focus on smart trade negotiations, especially with the US, and to reduce non-tariff barriers. He also encouraged businesses to diversify beyond traditional markets like the US and explore opportunities within Asean, and in regions such as China, India, and the Gulf.

Ultimately, Nazir said, while governments set the stage, it’s up to the private sector to lead the way in finding new markets.
