Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro will testify next week in a trial over his alleged role in a failed coup to overturn his 2022 election loss to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes has ordered in-person questioning of Bolsonaro and seven others starting Monday.Prosecutors accuse Bolsonaro of leading a criminal plot to block Lula’s rise to power, even discussing a “state of siege” with military leaders. Some former commanders testified Bolsonaro pushed for military intervention, while others in his administration denied any coup plans. The trial also covers the January 8, 2023 riots by Bolsonaro supporters, which prosecutors claim were the final attempt to stop Lula. Bolsonaro denies all charges, calling the case political persecution. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
