GENEVA — A UN investigation has accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, including attacks on schools, religious, and cultural sites that the commission says amount to attempts to "exterminate" Palestinians.
The UN Independent Commission of Inquiry reported that Israeli forces targeted civilians sheltering in educational and religious facilities, killing hundreds, including women and children. It said over half of Gaza’s religious and cultural landmarks have been destroyed, crippling its education system.
Commission chair Navi Pillay said there’s growing evidence of a deliberate campaign to destroy Palestinian life, calling the conditions in Gaza — especially for children — inhumane and dire.
The report also highlighted attacks in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, and accused Israel of failing to stop or punish settler violence. It noted intimidation of teachers and students who showed solidarity with Gaza’s civilians.
