KUALA LUMPUR — The site of the deadly Gerik crash that killed 15 UPSI students has been identified as one of the key sections of the East-West Highway (JRTB) set for major upgrades this year, with RM55 million allocated.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said improvements to the Gerik-Jeli route began in 2023, including RM30 million for road reconstruction and another RM30 million announced later by the Prime Minister. Upgrades—such as resurfacing, and repairs to bridges, lights, and other infrastructure—were completed in phases by August 2023.
For 2024, RM7.2 million has been allocated for additional repairs along the FT04 route. While investigations into the crash are ongoing, Nanta emphasized the ministry’s commitment to road safety but reminded that responsibility also lies with road users.
