AHMEDABAD — At least 265 people were killed after an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, striking a hostel and a canteen. Rescue teams with sniffer dogs are still searching the wreckage. One British passenger miraculously survived.
The flight, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport with 242 people on board, crashed within a minute of takeoff, with the nose hitting a canteen and the tail embedded in a hospital staff hostel. Several victims on the ground were also confirmed dead.
Officials say DNA testing is underway to identify victims, including those from overseas. Prime Minister Modi called the incident “heartbreaking” during his visit to the crash site. Among the dead were Indian, British, Portuguese, and Canadian nationals.
Investigators have not ruled out causes, but experts suggest a rare double engine failure—possibly from a bird strike—may be responsible. Boeing and international air safety teams are assisting with the investigation.
