MIAMI — Benfica battled back from 2-0 down to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw with Boca Juniors in a fiery Club World Cup Group C match, with both teams finishing the game with 10 men.
Boca took control early with goals from Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia, and looked poised for victory after Benfica were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute.
But Angel Di Maria’s first-half penalty and a late 86th-minute header from Nicolas Otamendi salvaged a point for the Portuguese side.
Tensions flared further as Benfica’s Andrea Belotti and Boca’s Nicolas Figal were both sent off in a match filled with hard tackles and heated moments.
