SEATTLE — River Plate kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds in Group E, dominating the match at Seattle’s Lumen Field.
Facundo Colidio opened the scoring with a header from Marcos Acuna’s cross, as River controlled the first half. Despite a spirited response from Urawa, including a save by Franco Armani and a penalty goal from Yusuke Matsuo, River stayed in command.
A defensive error allowed Sebastian Driussi to score River’s second, while Maximiliano Meza sealed the win with a header from a corner.
Though the stadium was far from full, traveling fans from Japan and Argentina brought energy to the match. River remained undefeated like other South American teams in the tournament.
Urawa’s coach Maciej Skorza expressed disappointment, citing defensive lapses as key to the loss.
