LYON — Bernard Lacombe, former France striker and Euro 1984 winner, has passed away at 72 after a long illness.
Lacombe began his career at hometown club Lyon, later playing for Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux. He scored 255 goals in 497 Ligue 1 matches — the second-highest in the league’s history, behind Delio Onnis.
After retiring, he returned to Lyon as manager from 1996 to 2000. The club paid tribute, calling him "our legend, the greatest of all."
For France, Lacombe earned 38 caps and scored 12 goals, including a key role in their Euro 1984 final win over Spain.
