KLANG — Selangor Islamic affairs exco Mohammad Fahmi Ngah warned that the recent Federal Court ruling in favour of Sisters in Islam (SIS) could pave the way for the spread of liberal and pluralistic Islamic ideologies.
He agreed with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) that the decision might be misused by some groups to promote alternative interpretations of Islam. Fahmi stressed that the state remains committed to monitoring and acting against individuals promoting such ideologies, which are still considered “deviant” under existing fatwas.
He urged the public to report any deviant teachings to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).
The Federal Court’s decision overturned parts of a Selangor fatwa, ruling that it applies only to individuals, not SIS Forum (Malaysia) as a company. The Sultan of Selangor expressed disappointment over the verdict and called on SIS to stop using the name “Sisters in Islam.”
