SYDNEY — Australia has voiced support for the US air strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, stressing the need to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said while Australia backs the action, it urges restraint to avoid a full-scale Middle East war. “We call for diplomacy and de-escalation,” she said.

The strikes followed UN findings that Iran breached uranium enrichment limits. Australia’s opposition supports the move, but the Greens have criticised it as a violation of international law.

Australia remains a close security ally of the US, with defence ties strengthened through the AUKUS submarine pact.
