KUALA LUMPUR — The government has temporarily postponed enforcing the Malay-language listing rule on e-commerce platforms like Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop following strong public backlash.
The regulation, part of the Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2024 (CPETTR 2024), was set to take effect on June 24. It requires product titles and descriptions to be in Bahasa Malaysia, with optional translations and original brand names allowed.
After online sellers raised concerns, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living confirmed that enforcement is paused for further review and that it will meet with platform operators to gather feedback.
While the regulation remains in place, no new enforcement date has been announced. Sellers are urging for clearer guidelines, better support, and more flexible implementation.
