JAKARTA — Indonesian rescuers are struggling to reach Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, 27, who fell from a cliff on Mount Rinjani last Saturday.
Marins, hiking with friends, slipped down the steep side of the 3,726-metre volcano. Located in West Nusa Tenggara, the volcano is a popular tourist destination.
Rescuers initially spotted her 150 metres down, but unstable sandy terrain caused her to slip to 500 metres by Monday. Fog and loose soil are hampering the rescue, and it's unclear if she’s still alive.
A helicopter has been deployed, and the hiking trail has been closed out of respect and to aid evacuation. Similar accidents have occurred on the mountain, including one involving a Malaysian tourist last month.
