Lawyer Datuk Syed Amir Syakib Arsalan has withdrawn his application to temporarily halt the Judicial Appointments Commission’s (JAC) functions and allow the prime minister to bypass it in appointing judges. His legal team informed the High Court they intend to file constitutional questions directly to the Federal Court instead. The main lawsuit, challenging the constitutionality of the JAC Act 2009, will still be heard on July 16. The court also approved Bersih as amicus curiae and allowed the Muslim Lawyers Association (PPMM) to hold a watching brief, given the case’s public interest.
