TOKYO — A Japanese court sentenced 22-year-old US Marine James Clayton to seven years in prison for choking and attempting to rape a woman in Okinawa last year, despite his not-guilty plea.
The Naha District Court found Clayton guilty of causing injury while attempting non-consensual sex, calling his actions highly dangerous and malicious. Prosecutors had sought a 10-year term, while the defence is considering an appeal.
The case adds to long-standing tensions between Okinawans and US military personnel, with a recent spike in crimes involving American troops on the island.
